Preserving the Orthodox Flame: Master Yoshinori Takita and the Modern Shotokan
As the current supreme representative of Nihon Karate-do Shotokai and fourth director of the historic Shotokan Central Dojo in Kikukawa, Sumida-ku, Tokyo, Master Yoshinori Takita safeguards the orthodox teachings of Master Gichin Funakoshi and the revolutionary biomechanics of Master Shigeru Egami into the twenty-first century.
The Chuo University Crucible and the Magome Household
Master Yoshinori Takita began his formal Karate-do journey at Chuo University, entering one of Japan's most demanding and rigorous university clubs. Rising through dedicated training to become club captain, Takita studied under the direct tutelage of Master Shigeru Egami and senior leader Master Jotaro Takagi.
During these formative years, Takita formed an intimate bond with the Egami family. As chronicled in Chiyoko Egami's memoir Kimikagesō (君影草), university students were frequent fixtures in the modest Magome household. Takita was among the devoted inner circle who frequented the family hearth, sharing meals prepared by Chiyoko, discussing martial philosophy late into the night, and assisting Master Egami during periods of severe physical illness.
Ascension to the Central Leadership
Following the passing of Master Jotaro Takagi in 2016, Master Yoshinori Takita was formally appointed as the 4th Kancho (Supreme Head) of the Shotokan Central Headquarters Dojo and President of Nihon Karate-do Shotokai.
Under his stewardship, the Central Dojo at 2-1-7 Kikukawa, Sumida-ku, Tokyo remains the global spiritual and technical epicenter of Shotokai practice:
- Non-Competitive Integrity: Continuing Master Funakoshi's categorical refusal to degrade karate into an adversarial spectator sport with points and weight divisions.
- Deep Soft Penetration: Teaching Egami's principles of natural posture, muscular relaxation (mukin), and abdominal breath control.
- The 19 Traditional Kata: Preserving the exact classical kata syllabus transmitted from Okinawa without cosmetic alterations.
"There Is No First Strike in Karate-do" (2023)
In 2023, under Master Takita's leadership, Nihon Karate-do Shotokai published an official international English volume titled "There Is No First Strike in Karate-do" (Karate ni Sente Nashi / 空手に先手なし). This publication reaffirmed the core ethical mandate of Master Gichin Funakoshi for modern international practitioners across five continents.
Today, Master Takita oversees more than 40 active branch dojos across Japan, while providing technical guidance to international Shotokai federations in Europe, North America, and South America. His dignified, quiet dedication personifies the enduring spirit of Master Egami's precept: Do not pursue those who leave; do not turn away those who come.
