Shiko Dachi • Square / Sumo Stance

Shotokai Karate Budo • Technical Descriptions • Stances (Dachi)

Similar in function to Kiba Dachi, the square stance (Shiko Dachi) differs primarily in the orientation of the feet: rather than pointing straight ahead, the feet are turned outward at approximately 180 degrees relative to each other (pointing 45 degrees outward to each diagonal).

This outward rotation of the feet allows for a deeper knee flexion and a lower center of gravity while releasing tension in certain muscle groups across the thighs and hips.
