O-Sensei Gichin Funakoshi (1868–1957) was born in Shuri, Okinawa. He studied Karate-do from childhood under Masters Yasutsune Azato and Yasutsune Itosu. In 1922 he organized the first public Karate exhibition in Tokyo, bringing the art to the Japanese mainland. He remained president of the Shotokai until his death at age 88. These archival photographs document the founder across key periods of his life — from formal portraits to rare gatherings with his principal disciples Yoshitaka Funakoshi and Shigeru Egami.
