Direct Student of Funakoshi and Egami
Jōtarō Takagi (髙木 丈太郎, April 10, 1927 – March 5, 2016) entered the Chuo University Karate Club in the immediate aftermath of World War II in April 1944/1946. There, he trained directly under Supreme Master Gichin Funakoshi and Master Shigeru Egami.
Takagi represented a rare synthesis of profound traditional martial discipline and modern civic excellence. He rose to the pinnacle of the Japanese business world, serving as President and Chairman of the Board of Daikyo Inc. (大京), one of Japan’s most successful real estate and urban development conglomerates. Throughout his corporate career, Takagi attributed his ethical clarity, physical stamina, and calm decision-making to the rigorous precepts of Karate-do.
Appointed Third Head of Shotokan (1995)
On April 22, 1995, following the retirement of Master Genshin Hironishi, Jotaro Takagi was unanimously appointed as the Third Head (Kancho) of the Central Headquarters Dojo Shotokan and Chairman of Nihon Karate-do Shotokai.
Under Takagi's visionary leadership:
- The Central Headquarters Dojo in Kikukawa, Sumida-ku, Tokyo, underwent a comprehensive modern architectural reconstruction, creating a world-class training center for authentic non-competitive karate.
- In May 2007, Shotokai obtained formal Japanese government status as a certified Non-Profit Organization (NPO), with Takagi serving as Second NPO Chairman from 2008 until his passing in 2016.
- International relationships were solidified with orthodox Shotokai groups across Europe, North America, and South America.
- Takagi mentored future leaders, including Yoshinori Takita, who succeeded him in 2016 as the 4th Head of Shotokan.
The Philosophical Defense: Why Karate-do Has No Contests
Master Takagi is celebrated throughout the martial arts world for his clear, uncompromising written articulation of why authentic Karate-do rejects sporting competitions and matches.
In his seminal discourse published in the official Shotokai booklet, Takagi observed:
"Karate is an art of lethal self-defense born from life-and-death necessity. In true combat with bare hands, an authentic strike aims at decisive vulnerability. If full power were unleashed in a contest, serious injury or death would be inevitable. Therefore, sporting competitions must impose arbitrary rules, protective pads, and artificial boundaries.
*The moment karate adapts itself to score points in a sporting match, its technique inevitably deteriorates into superficial slapping, rushed lunges, and game-playing. More dangerously, the practitioner develops an egoistic obsession with winning and defeating others, violating the foundational principle: 'There is no first strike in karate' (Karate ni sente nashi).
Through deep, repetitive practice of Kata, the body and mind unite. One does not seek to vanquish an external enemy, but to conquer one's own arrogance, fear, and weakness. Therein lies the true, eternal value of Karate-do."
Legacy and Transition
Master Takagi guided Nihon Karate-do Shotokai with unwavering moral authority until passing away on March 5, 2016 at the age of 88. His writings remain the definitive modern exposition of orthodox Shotokai philosophy.
